Cleaning Factory Grease from a New Chain โ€‹

Follow these steps to prepare your KMC e10 chain before its first use. This process only needs to be done once for a new chain. Afterward, maintaining the chain is simple, apply a drip lubricant like the FlowerPower Wax approximately every 300 km, depending on usage. This routine will ensure your chain stays clean, quiet, and efficient.

  1. Initial Cleaning with Non-Polar Solvent Place the chain inside a bottle and completely submerge it in mineral spirits or another non-polar solvent (white spirit). Shake the bottle vigorously for at least 2 minutes. For best results, let the chain soak overnight. (Note: This step is only for brand-new chains. Non-polar solvents can cause rust on chains that have been exposed to water.)

  2. Dry the chain. If the bath is dirty and a little yellowish. Return to step 1.

  3. Degrease with Citrus-Based Solution In a clean bottle, submerge the chain in a neutral, citrus-based degreaser, such as Chemical Guys Orange Degreaser or Simple Green Aerospace. Shake vigorously for about 5 minutes. (Tip: Always use a degreaser approved for aerospace use; standard Simple Green can cause hydrogen embrittlement.)

  4. Remove Residue with Compressed Air Take the chain out of the bottle and use compressed air to blow out the solvent and loosened debris from the chain rollers.

  5. Repeat Degreasing Process Submerge the chain in a fresh bottle of citrus-based degreaser, repeating step 2.

  6. Compressed Air Again Remove the chain and repeat step 3 to ensure all debris and solvent are expelled.

  7. Check Degreaser Clarity Inspect the clarity of the degreaser in the bottle from step 4. If it is not mostly clear, repeat steps 2โ€“5 with fresh degreaser until the liquid remains clean.

  8. Final Rinse with Polar Solvent Submerge the chain in a new bottle containing a polar solvent, such as denatured alcohol or acetone. Shake the chain for 30 seconds to 1 minute to remove any remaining residues.

  9. Dry the Chain Allow the chain to air dry for at least 15 minutes before proceeding with lubrication or waxing.

This process ensures a spotless chain, ready for optimal performance.

Mount Crankset Tooth Plate to Crankset Arms โ€‹

TIP

Before fully tightening the screws, be sure to turn the plate counter-clockwise as far as it will go.

  1. Align the crankset tooth plate (chainring) with the mounting holes on the crankset arms, ensuring the correct orientation for chain engagement.

  2. Insert the chimney screws through the holes in the chainring and into the corresponding threaded holes on the crankset arms.

  3. Hand-tighten each screw in a crisscross pattern to evenly distribute pressure and prevent misalignment.
